Hula Hooping

So as you may be aware I am organising this years European Hula Hoop Convention (and Sheffield Circus Skills Convention) in Sheffield on 7th-9th September 2012. This is quite some challenge organising such an event, and I have a lot of work to do! So I have been visiting lots of other conventions to get ideas, and learn from these experiences before our convention in Sheffield! http://www.hoopcon.eu So I went to the Dresden Juggling Convention in Germany, where I actually performed in the Gala Show and I taught some hula hooping. This I think has actually been my favourite convention so far. Below are some photos from Dresden taken by http://arne-sonnenburg.de I returned to the UK to continue with my studies, but came back to Germany not too long afterwards for the Bremen Juggling Convention, and to film a somewhat bizarre music video with Aleks and her friends in Hamburg. The music video was filmed on a farm, and at least the goats seemed impressed by our hula hooping ;) While I was over there I also visited the other Strudel Girl (Birte) in Berlin and finally went to check out and train at the Katakomben, Berlin's Juggling Centre http://www.jonglierkatakomben.de/ I came back to the UK just in time to head to the British Juggling Convention in Southend. I have missed the last few BJC's due to injury and operations, so I was just really happy to be there this year. Plus they ran some rather useful workshops such as how to run a convention - I figured this might be useful for tips to help me with this years European Hula Hoop Convention! I also taught some hula hoop and it was so nice to catch up with old friends and make some new! After the BJC I had a mad panic to get all my university work done and handed in before heading back to Germany for FS-Con (Fire Convention) in Kassel. This convention was amazing, and again one of the best conventions I have ever been to. I take my hat off to Sam, Anne and Lucky www.poiandfriends.com for organising this - I just hope I can do such a good job with my convention! Anyway while I was there I taught a hula hoop workshop, performed in the show, caught up with friends and even got a little bit sunburnt because the weather was so nice! Then this weekend I went to Lestival, a one day juggling event in Leicester, UK. Again taught more hula hoop and had a fairly chilled out and pleasant day. Now I have to focus on my university exams, but looking forward to returning to Germany at the end of the month. I will be teaching in Hamburg again on the 2nd June 2012, for further information and to book a place online check out the workshop page.

It has been far too long since I have written anything on here! Not enough hours in the day! So at Christmas I returned to Germany to teach another hoop workshop in Hamburg, it was really lovely to go back and teach there, and great to catch up with Uta, Aleks and Criz :) After this I travelled to Bielefeld, to visit Stephan and Anne, friends I met at the European Juggling Convention in Munich during the summer. While I was there we visited the castle and with a little help from Anne (filming), I made a video with my new LED Hula Hoops. I used vouchers I won from a video tutorial contest I entered on poiandfriends.com to get the hoops and you can view the video tutorial I made to win the contest here and the LED hoop video I made when I was in Bielefeld below... Shortly after I got back to England I had exams at university, so busy with revision! Then promoting our circus skills society (Circus Hallam) at the Refreshers Fair and Get Active Week. My hoop class at Sport Hallam (Hallam University Gym) is back on Thursday evenings 5.30pm - 6.30pm, if you wish to book call Sport Hallam on 0114 225 2449. On Saturday 11th February I taught an intensive hula hoop workshop at Greentop Circus in Sheffield, this completely sold out, and I am told there were a fair few people on the waiting list, so I think Greentop will be hosting another workshop soon! After the workshop, I headed straight to Birmingham for the Ballring Circus Convention where I performed my new Alice in Wonderland Hula Hoop Act, I shall also be performing this at the next Greentop Circus Cabaret in March. There are some photos of my hoop act below (Paul Silver Photography)...

It has been far too long since I have posted anything on here! While I was travelling around Germany I was not online so much (and living in a tent for part of my travels!), so I had very little time spare to update the website or get much else done. As soon as I got back to the UK, I had a lot to sort out before starting university. I am now studying an Extended Degree in Engineering & Mathematics, and I have a lot to learn, since previously I studied sports, fitness and circus. I never studied maths, physics, chemistry or any engineering related subjects at college - so kind of a steep learning curve! But I do enjoy understanding how stuff works, so I am enjoying it, and I'll be able to make some cool circus toys with my knowledge at the end of it. I have just updated the photo gallery, so there are more pictures on there, but here are a few from my time in Germany... Photos above are from the European Hula Hoop Convention in Regensburg, and the European Juggling Convention (EJC) in Munich. I had an amazing time over the summer in Germany. I met so many lovely people and made some really good friends - I can't wait to go back. While I was in Germany my friend Birte (from Berlin) and I, sort of got talked into doing a fire hoop act for the fire renegade at the EJC. A renegade show is an open stage which is held at juggling conventions, it's supposed to be a bit of fun, and to try out stuff in front of an audience of other jugglers. So in tribute to Bavaria we came up with our Strudel Girl Fire Hoop Act. You can view the video below. I hope to update this blog again soon, and will be posting more information about my next intensive hula hoop workshops to be held in Hamburg, Germany and Greentop Circus in Sheffield, UK.

So after a very long journey, I finally arrived in Nürnberg, Germany. Because I wanted to bring lots of hula hoops with me (and they are quite large), I had to send these to Brussels as registered luggage. To ensure they arrived in Brussels before I did, and before my connecting trains to Germany, I went to London the day before my train to book them in. Meaning I had a very long wait at St Pancras Station in London, and no sleep before my train at 6am the following morning! Anyway that all worked out fine, I got the Eurostar to Brussels, Belgium. I then collected my hoops and got on the ICE train to Frankfurt, Germany, and then another ICE train to Nürnberg. Once I arrived at Nürnberg station I met Anne from www.poiandfriends.com and she took me to her and Sam's house, where I am currently staying. They are both very lovely and have been looking after me well :) The weather here has been lovely and sunny. I did some hula hooping in their garden just after I arrived, and Sam took a picture of me (below). The first evening I was here we played some table football, first at the house and then in a local pub where Sam goes to practice and play with other people. The next day I did some more hula hooping in the garden, and taught the kids who live next door some hula hoop moves. In the evening Anne and I went to the swimming baths to swim, slide on the water flumes, use the sauna's and the steam room. This was a great plan, very relaxing! Today Sam and I have been helping with preperations for a party tonight which is being held in the house and garden next door. Then Anne and I will be heading to Regensburg for the European Hoop Convention either tonight or tomorrow morning! Looking forward to that and meeting lots of hula hoopers :)
